Four things spotted in the Soweto derby

The 177th Soweto derby between Kaizer Chiefs and Orlando Pirates on Saturday afternoon ended 1-0 in favour of Amakhosi.

Chiefs completed another league double over their rivals for the second consecutive season.

Substitute Olisa Ndah was unfortunate as he scored an own goal in the dying minutes of the Soweto derby as it was headed for a goalless stalemate.

FARPost looks at four talking points spotted during the match.

CHIEFS BACK LINE

Arthur Zwane reshuffled his defence, and Edmilson Dove returned to the team after sickness. Siyabonga Ngezana was moved back to his original position in the centre, and Zitha Kwinika was deployed in an unusual position at the right back.

ZWANE’S BODY LANGUAGE

Chiefs’ coach Arthur Zwane was calm on the touchline, dishing out some instructions to his charges. In some situations, Zwane showed frustration as the team were making mistakes and missing sitters. The mentor was not amused as Innocent Maela brought down Christian Saile Basomboli, denying them a clear-cut goalscoring opportunity.

LORCH SUBSTITUTION

The Pirates faithful were unhappy when star player Lorch was taken off in the second half just before the hour mark.

The fans booed Pirates coach Jose Riveiro who was sitting in the stands above the media centre due to suspension. Lorch had two moments in the match where he tried to find the back of the net.

CHIEFS’ SUPPORTERS

Amakhosi fans were happy throughout the Soweto derby, supporting the team and coach Zwane. It was not the case in the previous encounter. The fans were angry after a defeat in the last match against Golden Arrows. The police had to escort the coach to safety as fans called for his head.
