Jabu Mahlangu: ‘These players must pull up their socks’
Former Kaizer Chiefs and Orlando Pirates star Jabu Mahlangu has described the Soweto Derby played in the past weekend in the DStv Premiership as a disappointing affair.
Chiefs claimed the bragging rights over their rivals to complete a league double. They won with a narrow one-nil scoreline towards the end of the encounter, thanks to defender Olisa Ndah‘s own goal.
The encounter was different from the other previous derbies. It wasn’t a sold-out game at the FNB Stadium, as there were a lot of empty seats over just over 60 000 spectators in attendance.
JABU MAHLANGU BLAMES THE PLAYERS
Mahlangu puts the blame on the players from both teams for failing to play entertaining football. He strongly believes the display was way below the standard of the Soweto derby.
“What a disappointing Soweto derby, these players must pull up their socks. I think there are 20 countries that watch Soweto derby live,” Mahlangu posted on his Twitter account.
“Both teams were losing the ball, they couldn’t combine three, four touches. They were making silly errors and mistakes, that’s not the level of the Soweto derby.
“First half no shorts on target, there’s a lot of work that must be done. I don’t want to compare how the derby used to be like in our playing days.”
MAHLANGU’S TRUE REFLECTION OF THE DERBY
Mahlangu strongly believes it wasn’t a fair result at the end of the match.
“Coaches make mistakes, but at the end of the day it’s the players who play in the field. No team deserved to win [the derby], a true reflection of that game was a draw,” Mahlangu added.
