Why Ashley Du Preez is failing to replicate his Stellenbosch form
Kaizer Chiefs legend William Shongwe has explained why attacker Ashley Du Preez is failing to replicate the form he had at Stellenbosch FC last season.
Du Preez joined the Soweto giants ahead of the current DStv Premiership after an good campaign with the Stellies.
The Cape Town-born star scored nine goals and provided five assists in 29 league games.
At Chiefs, he has struggled for form, often missing golden scoring opportunities.
So far in Chiefs colours, Du Preez has been directly involved in seven goals in all competitions, as he has scored five goals and assisted two in 21 matches.
WHY DU PREEZ IS STRUGGLING AT CHIEFS
Shongwe believes Chiefs’ style of play under Arthur Zwane doesn’t suit Du Preez.
“For me he’s [Du Preez] a type of player that plays in transition, he is more of a runner. In build-up play, I don’t think he’s quite good,” Shongwe told FARPost.
“At Stellenbosch, they played more in transition, it suited him because they always killed the game with speed when they have the ball and their reverse attack was good.
“Du Preez plays well with a space behind the defensive line. When teams play Chiefs they don’t put a highline, they sit back and get a low block. That means he has no space to run, that cancels him out as good as he is, in that structure it doesn’t work.”
GOOD QUALITY PLAYER
Despite Du Preez struggling at the club, Shongwe doesn’t doubt the 25-year-old’s quality.
He believes Du Preez is a good player and the attacker even receive a Bafana Bafana call up and and made his debut at international level last season.
“He’s is a good player, had a great season at Stellenbosch FC. I just don’t think he’s helping Chiefs at the moment, somehow the style of Chiefs doesn’t suit him. He hasn’t made the impact he was expected to make,” he added.
