Rulani explains decision to hand Teboho Mokoena the captain’s armband
"He's been exceptional for us."
Mamelodi Sundowns head coach Rulani Mokwena has explained his decision to hand midfield maestro Teboho Mokoena, the captain’s armband at the club ahead of other senior players.
Mokoena is still reasonably new at Sundowns. He joined the Tshwane giants in the January transfer window during the 2021/22 DStv Premiership season from rivals SuperSport United.
In the current season, the Bafana Bafana international has been impressive for Masandawana. He has played 26 matches in all competitions, scoring one goal and providing two assists.
MOKOENA’S PERFOMANCE AND ATTITUDE
According to Sundowns coach, Rulani, the 26-year-old; Mokoena has been consistent in all the matches he has played and has displayed leadership qualities.
“He’s been exceptional for us, a consistent feature in our line-up with very good contributions towards the team,” Mokwena told the media.
“We see leadership potential in him in my opinion. Fortunately, the club is in the same space where we believe that you don’t need the armband to be a leader.
“They [other players] know it’s just a formality due to FIFA’s rules that you need someone to carry the armband, to have the responsibility of the captain.
OTHER LEADERS
Mokwena further revealed that Sundowns have a lot of leaders who can in any day wear the captain’s armband.
“We have so many leaders in the team. The reality of the situation is that we could have anyone with the armband,” he said.
“Marcelo Allende is the captain of the Chile national team with the U/20s, Grant Kekana is a leader himself and Mothobi Mvala was a leader in regards to Highlands Park.
“[Khuliso] Mudau shows great leadership potential. Ronwen Williams is the captain of the national team and was captain at SuperSport United.”
