Janine van Wyk raises hand for Banyana World Cup consideration 

Janine van Wyk has raised her hand to be considered for Banyana Banyana 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup selection following her recent stellar displays for her Greek side, Ergotelis FC.  

The Banyana co-captain, Van Wyk, helped Ergotelis secure a 2-0 win over Leoniko Kefisias on Sunday. 

The victory saw the Greek outfit open a six-point gap at the top of the table.

Van Wyk recently returned to the starting lineup with a clean sheet, as Ergotelis continued with their winning streak.

Following her impressive performances on the day, the veteran defender was named the Player of the Match [MVP]. 

The Banyana decorated centre-back, Van Wyk, returned to Europe to join Ergotoris FC in September last year.

HOW JANINE VAN WYK IS LIVING UP TO HER WORDS

When Van Wyk joined the Greece club, her aim was to raise the bar high. Given her experience and mindset of the beautiful game.  

At the moment, one can finally say that she is living up to her words as she continues shine in Europe and flying high the South African flag. 

With the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup fast approaching, Van Wyk will be hoping to cement her place in the Banyana squad.

Coach Desiree Ellis had snubbed the highly-rated defender from the squad that participated in the just-ended Turkish Women’s Cup.

The three-time CAF Women’s Coach of the Year, Ellis, cited that she wanted to give other players a chance to showcase their talents. 

Van Wyk remains the only South African most-capped player at the national level with 180 appearances. 

The eagerly-awaited Women’s World Cup will start from July 20 until August 20. The tournament will be co-hosted by Australia and New Zealand. 

Ellis’ charges are in Group G alongside Sweden, Italy and Argentina.
