Nedbank Cup giant killers Dondol Stars reveal game plan that eliminated AmaZulu
Dondol Stars co-head coach, Khuliso Rashamuse, has revealed their game plan that eliminated DStv Premiership side, AmaZulu, in the Nedbank Cup last 16.
Dondol eliminated another top-tier side in AmaZulu on Wednesday night, 9 March, in the Nedbank Cup.
The game finished in a 1-1 stalemate after 120 minutes of play and was won on penalties, 5-4, to Dondol after Gabadinho Mhango missed AmaZulu’s first penalty.
This was after the ABC Motsepe League side shocked the football world a couple of weeks ago, eliminating DStv Premiership side SuperSport United in the last 32.
Dondol scored their equaliser goal against AmaZulu from a corner kick. And their head co-coach, Rashamuse, revealed that coming into the game, set-pieces were part of their plan as they also use them to win some of their games in their league.
DONDOL ON WHY SETS-PIECES WERE PART OF THEIR NEDBANK CUP GAME PLAN
“We use them to win our football matches in our ABC Motsepe League. We prep for them and spend hours and hours preparing for them.
“We go to training sessions for that because, in the lower leagues, it’s easy if you get a weaker team. You can capitalise.
Now, seeing with our previous Nedbank Cup opponent [SuperSport], it almost worked out, so why not try it again,” said Rashamuse.
THE IMPORTANCE OF TEAMWORK
Besides the tactical part of the game, Rashamuse also revealed that teamwork is essential for Dondol.
“We love to keep things simple, Vinny [the other co-coach] will polish it. You know Vinny speaks this language, but I go straight to the point.
“Football is a team sport, and we know you will get players that are top, are brilliant. But if they come to the party and work for the team, you will get great results,” concluded Rashamuse.
Dondol progressed to the Nedbank Cup quarter-finals in their first campaign in the competition.
