Rulani Mokwena on which three players should be nominated for Footballer of the Season

Mamelodi Sundowns head coach Rulani Mokwena has said his piece on which three players should be nominated for the PSL Footballer of the Season award.

With the season in the final stretch now, debates as to who deserves the main award at the end of the season are heating up.

The Brazilians’ youngster Cassius Mailula and Orlando Pirates’ Monnapule Saleng are two names that are on everyone’s lips. It comes as no surprise as both players have been flying high and banging goals consistently.

Mokwena, in his opinion, says all three nominees should come from his side. And he believes the award will go to Chloorkop.

“I would give you the Sundowns squad and I say to you, choose the most stand out of the list because it’s gonna be very difficult to do that,” he said in the interview with Marawa Sports Worldwide.

“But maybe moving from last season where the shortlist was three Mamelodi Sundowns players and you could have chosen either one between AJ [Andile Jali], Peter [Shalulile] and Themba Zwane.

“I think it’s going to be the same this season too because they have been incredible. The level of consistency in the performance has been incredible.

“I just believe that the award will definitely go to a Sundowns player and I don’t personally believe in individual awards in a football context.

“I think the game always has to be a game that’s owned by the group or the team and I believe that the success of the individual is only a reflection of the contribution of the rest of the teammates.

“The amount of goals that Peter and Cassius [Mailula] are scoring, it’s only because of the quality of the teammates around them. And the amount of work that we put in on a day-to-day basis.”

Last season, it was Sundowns individuals who won big at the awards with Shalulile walking away with Footballer of the Season, Player’s Player of the Season, and Golden Boot.

Meanwhile, Andile Jali scooped Midfielder of the Season, MTN8 Last Man Standing and Nedbank Cup Player of the Tournament.

Mokwena and Manqoba Mngqithi, together won the Coach of the Season award as they were still co-head coaches.
