Sibusiso Vilakazi: ‘I had to make a tough decision’

"It was just an opportunity whereby I said, I would like to use it."

Former Bafana Bafana international Sibusiso Vilakazi has revealed what convinced him to join Sekhukhune United.

Vilakazi recently penned a short deal term with Sekhukhune after surprisingly being released by TS Galaxy, having joined the club at the beginning of the current season.

The much-publicized unpleasant departure at DStv Premiership side Galaxy is something Vilakazi has now put in the past.

The highly-rates star made his Sekhukhune debut in the 2-0 win over Cape Town Spurs in a Nedbank Cup round of 16 game on Friday evening, 10 March in Polokwane.

Vilakazi said that he appreciates that Sekhukhune showed interest in him when he was going through a difficult time on a personal level.

Why it was a TOUGH decision to join Sekhukhune for Vilakazi

“It was not easy [the decision to join Sekhukhune], but it happened the way it happened. I won’t go into further details about how it happened, but it happened. But it was not easy,” said Vilakazi.

“It was just an opportunity whereby I said, I would like to use it, and try to see how I can help the team and how the team can help me also,” said Vilakazi.

“But for me more than anything it was more about appreciating the team that came forward when I was going through difficult times in my life.

“I have said it previously, and of course, it’s a closed chapter [Galaxy], so Sekhukhune is a new one, so I will try to grab it,” he added.

The former Mamelodi Sundowns star further stated that he took his time before making a decision as he wanted to join a club with the right structure.

“The lesson that I have learned is [the right] structure. Throughout my career, the teams that I played for had a structure,” said Vilakazi.

“So within the structure, you have a target, ambitions, and a team. Like Sekhukhune also, what makes me happy is the structure and the level of commitment.

“The level of hunger and discipline, so all these stages are there in the team. From the chairman [Simon Malatji] to the coaches [Brandon Truter and MacDonald Makhubedu], there are different structures that you need to go to.

“So all of that is very organised, so for me, it was a no-brainer when I saw that, and of course, I had to take some time to see that, and I saw that.”
