Chiefs edge Casric Stars to book Nedbank Cup quarterfinal place

Kaizer Chiefs have defeated the Motsepe Foundation Championship side Casric Stars with a 2-1 scoreline to reach the Nedbank Cup quarterfinals at FNB Stadium on Sunday evening.

The showpiece started off on a slow pace, as both sides struggled to find any real momentum.

KAIZER CHIEFS AWARDED PENALTY

Luckily enough, Chiefs were awarded a penalty as the ball was handled in the box by the visitors.

Bonfils-Caleb Bimenyimana made no mistake as he converted the penalty in the 11th minute.

As the first period wore on, the South African football second-tier side failed to find an equaliser despite several half chances.

However, the Soweto giants upped the ante from there on but were guilty of wasteful finishing in front of Casric goals.

In an end-to-end first half, the contest went into the half-time break with Arthur Zwane’s charges leading by 1-0.

In the second stanza, Casric kicked off the game on the front foot as they pushed forward in numbers in their quest to find an equaliser.

In the 62nd minute, Chiefs’ defence was caught napping as the visitors levelled matters through Kgomotso Mosadi.

After Chiefs’ second goal, Casric tried to gain some dominance, but the Glamour Boys stood their ground.

Amakhosi continued to put in a resilient defensive performance to rebuff the efforts of the visitors’ attackers to claim the hard-fought win.

As a result, Chiefs become the last team to cruise their way into the Nedbank Cup last eight.

Meanwhile, earlier today, Stellenbosch FC humiliated TS Galaxy with a 6-3 drubbing at Mbombela Stadium.
