‘This is one game to forget’: Arthur Zwane

Kaizer Chiefs advanced to the quarterfinals of the Nedbank Cup but coach Arthur Zwane says their match against Casric Stars is ‘one game to forget’.

The Soweto giants joined the other PSL clubs Chippa United, Royal AM, Mamelodi Sundowns, Sekhukhune United, Orlando Pirates and Stellenbosch in the last eight of the Nedbank Cup.

Dondol Stars is the only lower-tier league team remaining in the coveted cup competition.

Kaizer Chiefs beat Casric Stars 2-1 courtesy of goals scored by Bonfils-Caleb Bimenyimana and Ashley Du Preez.

Kgomotso Mosadi scored Casric Stars’ consolation goal.

However, despite edging the Motsepe Foundation Championship side, Zwane said he expected his men to do better.

WHY ARTHUR ZWANE WAS DISSATISFIED

The former midfielder was not satisfied by how his man applied themselves, saying this was arguably their worst display.

Zwane conceded that his men were cowed into submission to play Casric Stars’ type of football.

“If you watched the games, you will see that it is always difficult to play against teams coming from first division. They play with energy more than structure,” said Zwane.

“I think we know that we could have done better in terms of structure. We always want to play to our utmost best, to have an identity of how we play.

“But this is one game to forget in terms of our standard. I think we went down to their level. I take nothing away from them. They are a good team. They have their strengths and weaknesses.

“I know we could have done better but days like these are there in football. You always find players in that situation for some reason.

“As coaches, we don’t give up on trying to get the best out of the players and the club going forward.

“This is one game, just to forget. What was important for us was to go through to the next round.”

WHY LOWER TIER TEAMS ARE DIFFICULT FOR ZWANE

Zwane outlined the key factors that made his team fail to produce a sterling performance.

He said the gulf in quality between leagues, makes it difficult for DStv premiership to adjust when drawn against teams from lower tier leagues.

“Teams from lower leagues are difficult because you don’t know they will approach the game.

“Unlike when you play a team that is in the PSL. You know their way of attacking and defending. What is it that they do best. We even profile the players.

“You know, when they have a certain player, they are likely to do this or that. But it’s not easy when you are playing against a team from the first division,” added the Chiefs coach.
