Kaizer Chiefs legend gives his verdict on Austin Dube

Kaizer Chiefs legend William Shongwe has given his verdict on out-of-favour centre-back Austin Dube.

Dube, who was tipped to excel at the Soweto giants after he linked with the club ahead of the 2021/22 DStv Premiership season, have been struggling for game time.

In his first season, the 30-year-old made 17 appearances in all competitions. He started 12 matches and was substituted in five times.

In the current season, Dube has only one appearance to his name. He was a surprise name in the starting line-up when Chiefs hosted Golden Arrows back in February.

SHONGWE’S VERDICT ON AUSTIN DUBE

Shongwe believes Dube’s struggles in the DStv Premiership are because he didn’t graduate from the NFD.

“He [Austin Dube] just never got going from the time he arrived at Kaizer Chiefs,” Shongwe told FARPost.

“He was excellent at Richards Bay FC when he was there in the NFD, but I just don’t think that he graduated to the DStv Premiership.”

WHAT’S NEXT FOR DUBE AT CHIEFS

Dube who penned a three-year contract with Amakhosi has got one year remaining with an option to extend a further two years.

His stay at the club may however be cut short due to stiff competition at the centre-back position. Chiefs have Zitha Kwinika, Siyabonga Ngezana, Njabulo Ngcobo, Eric Mathoho and Edmilson Dove.

The club are strengthening their squad at the back. At the beginning of March they announced that SuperSport United and Botswana international defender Thatayaone Ditlhokwe has signed a pre-contract which will be a four-year stay.

To add, Chiefs have snapped TS Galaxy captain Given Msimango. The towering 25-year-old is believed to have signed a four-year deal as well.
