Former Cape Town City midfielder Mpho Makola has opened up on how the club bizarrely axed him.
Makola was shown the exit door at City during the January transfer window with five months left on his contract.
The former Orlando Pirates star was a surprise exit after the club in the past expressed how they valued him and the experience he brought to their youthful side.
‘Bibo’ spent four seasons with the Citizens after being signed on a free transfer. The skilful attacker made over 90 appearances in all competitions for the Capetonians, scoring three goals while contributing five assists.
MPHO MAKOLA HAD A FALLOUT WITH ERIC TINKLER AT CAPE TOWN CITY
Despite establishing himself as a key player for City, Makola admitted he had a fallout with Coach Eric Tinkler.
“Things [at Cape Town City] started to change after I missed a Cricket match that the team was meant to attend,” Makola told SNAWA.
“I couldn’t go to that Cricket match because I had a meeting with my lawyer. After I missed that Cricket match, I was dropped for the next match.
“So when I asked, the coach told me about the Cricket match I didn’t attend. I said, ‘but I’m here to play football, not to watch Cricket’,” Makola added.
The former Bafana Bafana international has since joined Motsepe Foundation Championship side Polokwane City on a short-term deal.
Meanwhile, Cape Town City have been inconsistent in the DStv Premiership. They have won nine games, drawn six and lost eight times in 23 games played. They are currently 5th on the log with 33 points.
The John Comitis-owned team finished runners-up in the league last season. However, they have seemingly struggled to replicate the form of the previous campaign.
City will return to league action after a two-week FIFA break when they take on high-flying Mamelodi Sundowns. The match is scheduled for Tuesday, 4th of April 2023.
