Pirates’ Screamer Tshabalala details how PSL coaches should handle youngsters
Orlando Pirates director Stanley Screamer Shabalala has detailed how PSL coaches should handle youngsters that are new in South Africa’s top-flight.
According to Shabalala, most youngsters will be brimming with talent coming from lower or developmental divisions [DStv Diski Challenge], however, fragile.
He says they need proper guidance from their mentors to properly develop, become consistent and excel as they will be playing football at a much higher level.
HOW COACHES SHOULD HANDLES YOUNGSTERS
Shabalala stated that PSL coaches should work closely with these players so they are on the right track to improve their game.
“My problem is with coaching, with young talent like that, they need coaches. I don’t think coaches help players enough, there is so much these youngsters can learn,” Shabalala told Extra-Time on Gagasi.
“If you want to unearth or take out this burst talent from these youngsters, you need to work with them. You need to sacrifice so much, it can never be 9-10 then you gone, it’s not enough.
SHABALALA ON RADIOPANE
Shabalala went on to use Boitumelo Radiopane, a Bucs striker on loan at Cape Town Spurs, as an example on how coaches should help young talent.
“Boitumelo Radiopane is a talent, he score goals, but Radiopane needs to be nurtured nicely. You need coaches that will help the youngster because there is one or two things that he doesn’t have.
“He can never be a nice striker, you got to have a little devil in you as a striker. You must force your way in there and be ruthless.
“The coach must help him out on how to finish in that 18-area whether it’s a header. At times don’t rush, hold and pick a spot and some times hold and finish,” he added.
Radiopane is developing well at Cape Town Spurs under the supervision of Shaun Bartlett. The 22-year-old has scored five goals in the league.
