Ex-Jose Mourinho assistant gets Zim giants believing again

Ex-Jose Mourinho assistant coach Baltermar Brito appears to have finally struck the right chords for Highlanders in Zimbabwe.

Baltermar Brito joined Highlanders halfway through last season when he replaced Mandla Mpofu who was sacked over poor results.

The 70-year-old helped the Bulawayo giants finish on fifth position as he also adpated to the Zimbabwean game.

Intrestingly, the well-travelled tactician seems to have found his formula to end Highlanders’ 16-year wait for a PSL title.

On Sunday, Brito shredded the form book to frustrate former Chippa United coach Norman Mapeza as Highlanders beat FC Platinum 2-1.

This was their first victory over FC Platinum in nine years, a undoubted milestone powered by the ex-Jose Mourinho assistant coach.

“They have quality players. They know how to play. The team has a coach [Norman Mapeza] who has spent a long time at the club.

“They came here and they kept the ball. We felt comfortable with them on the ball. What is important right now is to get the points.

“It doesn’t matter how. For us the three points are the most important. If we want to make achievements, we need to understand we have to get points from teams like FC Platinum,” said Brito.

Highlanders last won the league title in 2006 then under Methembe Ndlovu.

After Ndlovu, they changed coach after coach but none of them including former DStv Premiership coach Mark Harrison delivered.

However Baltermar Brito has even got the supporters believing again.

And as the league is still in it’s infancy, the expatriate coach is playing cards close to his chest.

So far three rounds of matches have been played, with Highlanders third on the Zimbabwe Premier Soccer League standings. They have seven points on their tally.

Dynamos and Caps United are ahead on goal difference. In two weeks, Bosso as Highlanders is fondly known face Dynamos in the famed Battle of Zimbabwe.
