Cassius Mailula reacts to winning his maiden league title.

Mamelodi Sundowns sensation Cassius Mailula has reacted to winning his maiden DStv Premiership title this season with the senior team.

Mailula burst onto the scene with some eye-catching performances for Sundowns this season, playing a key role in their march to the title.

Downs maintained their dominance in the PSL by clinching their sixth straight league title this week, doing so with seven matches to spare.

Their goalless draw against Cape Town City on Tuesday was immaterial in the grand scheme of things, with Downs already crowned champions.

And throughout this season, one of the players who have raised their hand the highest for Downs has been the 22-year-old from Limpopo.

CASSIUS MAILULA’S BRILLIANT BREAKTHROUGH SEASON

Mailula was especially key for Sundowns in the period that their top striker Peter Shalulile’s was injured, filling the huge void left by the prolific Namibian.

The Sundowns academy graduate has scored 14 goals in 25 appearances for the Tshwane giants this season in all competitions.

His brilliant form has also seen him rewarded with a maiden call-up to the senior national team by coach Hugo Broos.

He made his Bafana Bafana debut against Liberia last month at Orlando Stadium in a 2-2 draw in an AFCON qualifier.

Mailula, speaking on his club’s social media platforms, said he was over the moon with his maiden trophy at senior level with Sundowns.

WHAT IT MEANS TO WIN THE LEAGUE TITLE

“It feels so amazing [winning first league title] I feel so blessed to be part of this team,” said Mailula.

“I just want to thank the almighty God and the coaches for giving me this opportunity. And also, it has not been an easy season for me because I had to adapt to everything. But I’m so happy and overwhelmed with winning this title.”

It could get even better for Mailula in his first full season with the senior team, as Sundowns are only a handful of matches away from potentially adding the CAF Champions League to their cabinet.

Sundowns are also in the quarter-finals of the Nedbank Cup and could finish the season with a treble, should everything go according to plan.

And Mailula is likely to be one of the big winners at the PSL awards at the end of the season, capping off what would be a breakthrough season to remember.
