Former Bafana winger Delron Buckley lands big role with German outfit
Former Bafana Bafana winger Delron Buckley has landed a big role with German outfit Arminia Bielefeld.
Buckley, whose preferred position was on the left wing, played for the club between 2004 and 2005.
The German side are no strangers to South Africa. They currently have a partnership with PSL side Maritzburg United, another one of Buckley’s former teams.
The two clubs regularly host digital training sessions as they exchange knowledge in coaching and youth development.
THE BIG ROLE
Bielefeld, who have had South African players such as Buckley, Rowen Fernandez, Siyabonga Nkosi and Sibusiso Zuma in their books, have now strengthened their relationship with the country.
Buckley is now the club’s ambassador. He will work locally to create awareness about the club and covey their tradition and values.
Buckley is delighted with his new role and is looking forward to representing Bielefeld to the best of his abilities.
“I’m really looking forward to all upcoming projects. I’m proud to represent Arminia Bielefeld in my home country,” Buckley said on the club’s website.
“I had a great time in Bielefeld back then, and I never lost touch. As an ambassador, I would like to convey the values of the club in an incredibly football-loving country.”

“Delron Buckley will represent Arminia Bielefeld authentically, sympathetically and credibly,” said Bielefeld’s Managing Director, Christoph Wortmann.
“Together with him, we want to intensify our activities in the long term in order to take the next steps within the framework of our closed cooperation with Maritzburg United and the German Chamber of Industry and Commerce for Southern Africa.”
Buckley made a strong impact as a player for Bielefeld back in the 2004/05 season, where he scored 15 goals in 29 Bundesliga games.
After one season at Bielefeld, Buckley joined Borussia Dortmund, signing a four-year contract and featuring in 28 matches that season.
He represented his country on 73 occasions and was part of the Bafana team that played at the 1998 and 2002 FIFA World Cups.
