Ronwen Williams closing in on big record in the DStv Premiership

Mamelodi Sundowns goalkeeper Ronwen Williams is closing in on an astonishing PSL record for a keeper in a single season.

The Bafana Bafana number one will write his name in the history books should he manage to keep three more clean sheets for Sundowns.

The former SuperSport United shot-stopper has six matches to try and break Moeneeb Josephs’ clean sheet record.

RONWEN WILLIAMS INCHING CLOSER TO RECORD

Williams has kept 15 clean sheets for Sundowns this season, leading the Brazilians to a record-extending sixth straight title.

In the process, Williams has equalled Sundowns’ club record of seven clean sheets in a row. Calvin Marlin is the only other keeper to achieve the feat.

Although he fell short of Wayne Roberts’ PSL record of nine successive clean sheets for Bidvest Wits in the 2003-04 season, Williams has his sights on a bigger one.

He is eager to eclipse Josephs as the keeper with the most clean sheets in a season, with the former Orlando Pirates goalie holding the record with 17, according to OptaJabu.

Speaking about his clean sheets this season, Williams has previously given credit to his teammates for ensuring he doesn’t concede a lot of goals.

IT’S A TEAM EFFORT

“It is not about Ronwen. It is about the whole team,” Williams told the media.

“Funny enough, before we play, you will find someone like Cassius [Mailula] telling me ‘clean sheet today’. It just shows the mentality that we have as a team.”

“Everyone celebrates a clean sheet like we scored a goal. So, a clean sheet is important because it means we have one foot in three points already.”

Williams has been colossal for Sundowns between the sticks since joining from Tshwane rivals at the beginning of the season.

He has only missed three league games for the champions this season and has kept a whopping 18 clean sheets in 29 appearances in all competitions.
