Steve Barker defines Sibongiseni Mthethwa’s role at Stellenbosch FC
Stellenbosch FC coach Steve Barker has defined the important role midfield engine Sibongiseni Mthethwa plays in the middle of the park.
Mthethwa has been key for the Captonians this season in the DStv Premiership. The midfielder, nicknamed “Ox”, has made 26 appearances in all competitions and provided one assist.
The Bafana Bafana international was a notable absentee as the Stellies lost 2-1 to Soweto giants Kaizer Chiefs last time out due to suspension.
STEVE BARKER DEFINES MTHETHWA’S ROLE
According to Barker, Mthethwa has gelled very well into the squad.
“I think Sibongiseni Mthethwa has been integral to the way we do things here. He has had a very good season. He’s consistent week in, week out,” said Steve Barker.
“He gives us that sort of steel and energy in midfield. He has the ability to progress the ball.
“It’s good to have him back to add that sort of midfield role we require against a team like Royal AM.
LEE LANGEVELDT BACK IN BETWEEN THE STICKS
The Cape Town outfit will welcome back skipper Lee Langeveldt as goalkeeper Sage Stephens is serving a suspension after receiving a red card against Kaizer Chiefs.
Stephens’ absence won’t be felt that much as the club has a huge depth in the goalkeeping department. Barker made a bold statement on the experienced goalie, saying he’s one of the top keepers in South Africa.
“I think that’s an advantage of having good depth in our goalkeeping department. He’s a very accomplished goalkeeper.
“Langeveldt is the club captain. He’s served us very well since the NFD days getting promoted. He’s very reliable. For me, one of the best shot-stoppers in the country.
NEXT STOP ROYAL AM
Stellies are eyeing a win against Royal AM on Sunday, 9 April, after losing their last match.
Steve Barker-coached side are pursuing a top-eight finish as they lay ninth on the standings with 30 points at par with ninth-placed TS Galaxy.
Kickoff at Chatsworth Stadium is at 3pm.
