How lack of exposure is the biggest undoing among PSL coaches
As the 2022/23 football season heads to its end, lack of exposure at the highest level emerges as one of the biggest undoings among PSL coaches.
Out of the 16 teams in the current PSL season, eight coaches do not have full seasons as head coaches.
They include Mamelodi Sundowns’ Rulani Mokwena, Arthur Zwane of Kaizer Chiefs and Vusi Vilakazi of Golden Arrows.
Richards Bay’s Vasili Manousaki, new AmaZulu coach Ayanda Dlamini, Musa Nyatama of Swallows, Chippa’s Kurt Lentjies and Selaotse Mosala complete the list.
Four of the above mentioned coaches, Dlamini, Nyatama, Lentjies and Mosala are embroiled in the relegation fight.
HOW MOKWENA HAS BEEN ABOVE THE REST IN THE 2022/23 SEASON
With the exception of Mamelodi Sundowns’ Rulani Mokwena, the rest of the other coaches have produced indifferent results.
Mokwena helped the Tshwane giants retain the 2022/23 football season title, and they are well on course to reach the CAF Champions League final.
Despite spending the better part of his career at Kaizer Chiefs, Arthur Zwane has blown hot and cold since taking the hot seat.
In his maiden season as the Soweto giants head coach, Zwane has presided over 29 matches in all competitions. They won 15 times, lost eight times and drew on six occasions.
A lot has been expected from Zwane, especially to break Mamelodi Sundowns’ stranglehold of the Premiership. But he has fallen short.
Orlando Pirates’ Jose Riveiro does not have a full season in the PSL but has a respectable profile having coached in Europe.
However, he has been exceptional in his adaptation to the DStv Premiership. The Spaniard has so far presided over 30 matches, with 17 wins, five draws and eight losses.
For Riveiro, the adaptation phase has been decent having won the prestigious MTN8 title.
The same doesn’t apply to Sead Ramovic who is in his maiden PSL season with TS Galaxy.
Ramovic finds himself in a precarious position with TS Galaxy having managed seven wins in the 26 he presided.
They are six points away from the first relegation slot. Galaxy has also drawn 12 times while losing seven games.
