Maluleke explains why Limpopo PSL teams fail to compete

Another PSL season is about to conclude and yet more Limpopo teams find themselves fighting for their lives in their respective divisions.

It has actually become a ‘norm’ in the South African domestic league that you find at least one or two clubs from the province fighting for relegation.

Up to this day, no team from the far north has won a league title. It actually becomes an achievement if one of them finishes in the top eight.

Recently Baroka [2018 Telkom Knockout] and Marumo Gallants [2020 Nedbank Cup] are the only teams to have won a domestic trophy. Currently, Gallants sit second from the bottom of the DStv Premiership and face the danger of relegation.

In the Motsepe Foundation Championship, Black Leopards, TTM, Venda Football Academy and Baroka are fighting for their lives.

ISHAMAEL MALULEKE’S TAKE

Limpopo-born former PSL top goal scorer Ishmael Maluleke has shared his thoughts on what could be a major factor in the province’s failure to compete at the highest level.

“When you look at KZN, they have a lot of teams but they hardly get relegated,” said Maluleke.

“So something needs to be done to keep these teams at the top because it was beautiful to see Baroka, Leopards and Polokwane City all in the premiership at once.”

ADMINISTRATIVE INCAPACITY FOR PSL LIMPOPO TEAMS?

“We need to look at our administration, not leadership per se but in terms of identifying talent. Because sometimes we believe in outside talent than we have.

“So I think we also need to grow the talent we have because they will play with their hearts out.

“But once you bring people who come for money and are not fully focused they will just come and play. Whether the team gets relegated or not it doesn’t matter because they will go to another province,” he added.

“But once you give the young kids in the province they can fight for you so the problem is that we use the young players to promote the team but once we are there we dump them so it discourages them.”
