Nigeria legend axed as ex-Baroka coach returns to former club

Zambian Super League side Zanaco has axed Nigeria legend Emmanuel Amunike, with an ex-Baroka FC coach taking over the reins.

Amunike has been a Consultant Coach alongside Kelvin Kaindu and Emeka Amadi. The club has since dismantled the coaching unit, bringing in a former Chipolopolo mentor.

The side’s CEO, Modest Hamalabbi, has sent words of thanks to the departed technical team trio for the job they have done during their tenure at the club.

ZANACO APPOINTS FORMER BAROKA MENTOR AS INTERIM COACH

Wedson Nyirenda returns to Zanaco for a second stint, albeit on an interim basis until the end of the 2022/23 campaign.

Nyirenda was head coach of Zanaco from 2009 until 2011, when he joined arch-rivals Zesco United. The club’s management felt it was the right decision to return Nyirenda. This is because of his extensive experience with the beautiful game.

The 56-year-old mentor comes highly rated as he has coached in South African football top flight and Mozambique.

‘NYIRENDA WILL INSPIRE THE TEAM TO GREATER SUCCESS’

In a statement, Hamalabbi stated that Nyirenda would add value to the club. He has won several titles in his coaching career spanning over 25 years.

“The board of directors and management of Zanaco are confident that Mr Nyirenda will inspire the team to greater success,” read the club’s press release.

Zanaco is in 13th place on the log standings with 34 points after 28 outings. The club is still to play six games in the current season. Nyirenda will lead the team to the promised land.
