Shaun Bartlett identifies Chiefs target’s best position
Bafana Bafana legend Shaun Bartlett has picked the best position for one of Kaizer Chiefs’ exciting targets.
Shaun Bartlett, Bafana’s second-top scorer of all time with 28 goals, would know better about striking abilities.
His forward at Cape town Spurs, Ashley Cupido, has been a reliable goal-getter at the Mother City outfit this season.
Cupido has hit the net 14 times in 25 games in the hotly contested Motsepe Foundation Championship.
He has featured mostly from the bench in his 24 appearances.
Impressive goal return
And the impressive goal return has helped put the Capetonians in good stead to smash and grab the promotion ticket to the elite league.
The Cape Town-born attacker caught the eye of Kaizer Chiefs, with several other teams linked with him.
His incredible goal-scoring abilities suggest that he is a prolific forward.
But where exactly is his best position? His coach Bartlett, who has worked with him for two seasons has revealed his most ideal position.
“He is a boy that’s got a great eye for goals; he scored 14 of those goals from a wing position,” explained Bartlett.
“It’s not easy because he is not a striker. But a lot of the goals coming from the wide coming in, taking shots and things like that. So he just needs to keep his feet grounded.
Work hard
“As a team, we work hard and create opportunities, and he is there to finish them off. I am pretty sure he can get to 20 goals come the end of the season.”
At the moment, Spurs are third on the table after amassing 47 points from 25 games. Casric Stars are at the top with 50 points, having played the same number of fixtures.
And Cupido’s ingenuity has not gone unnoticed, earning him a national Under 23 call-up.
He was part of the team that failed to qualify for the 2023 AFCON when they drew 1-1 on aggregate with Congo Brazzaville in March.
Brazzaville qualified via the away goal rule, having drawn 1-1 in South Africa before a goalless draw at home.
