Mduduzi Shabalala: ‘The only way to end Chiefs trophy drought is…’
Kaizer Chiefs starlet Mduduzi Shabalala has revealed the only way to end the club’s eight-year trophy drought.
Mduduzi Shabalala says it’s their responsibility as players to up their game and change the club’s disappointing situation.
In the previous seasons, Chiefs were known as South African ‘cup specialists’ as they clinched almost every trophy they competed in.
All that is now in the past. The last time the Soweto giants added a new piece of silverware in their trophy cabinet was back in 2014/15 when they won the league.
Amakhosi came close to ending the drought in the 2020/21 CAF Champions League final. They were, however humbled 3-0 by Egyptian giants Al Ahly.
The Glamour Boys’ last chance to redeem their season is to win the Nedbank Cup. But it will be a mountain to climb with other seven teams also eyeing the silverware.
These clubs are Orlando Pirates, Mamelodi Sundowns, Royal AM, Sekhukhune United, Dondol Stars, Stellenbosch FC and Chippa United.

“Obviously, we [players] are the ones who can change this. We are the ones who are playing,” said Shabalala.
“We are trying our level best so that we can get to the final, win the Nedbank Cup and put the club back where it belongs.
“The commitment, the fight and the desire is there for us to go all the way.”
FOCUS ON ROYAL AM
Shabalala further stated how they are planning to approach their crucial, must-win Nedbank Cup quarter-final tie against Royal AM on Sunday, 16 April.
“We have been looking at them. We’ll try to take advantage of their weaknesses because they are a good ball-playing team, just like us. So we’ll try to do our best to score as many goals as we can,” added.
Kickoff at Chatsworth Stadium is at 6pm.
