Ex-Sundowns striker points out why the club has been struggling lately

Ex-Mamelodi Sundowns striker Katlego Mashego has pointed out why the club has been struggling in their recent matches.

He says it’s a mental thing and they’ve taken the foot is off the pedal.

Since clinching their six successive DStv Premiership title, Sundowns has failed to replicate their winning form. They are now winless in four matches in all competitions, with three draws and one defeat.

At first, they struggled to score goals. Masandawana fired blanks in back-to-back league matches against Cape Town City and Swallows FC as they were held to 0-0 draws respectively.

Sundowns then drew 1-1 against Golden Arrows before Stellenbosch FC eliminated them from the Nedbank Cup winning 2-1 on Saturday 15 April.

According to Mashego, the players seem to be relaxed now that they have won the league.

“I just think it’s a mental thing, the foot is off the pedal. They have won the league, probably the mind and the body is tired,” Mashego told FARPost.

“They have nothing to play for, they’ve already won the league. I won’t say it’s a problem, it happens I’ve spoken about this before.

DRASTIC SQUAD ROTATION

Mashego further believes the rotation of players might have disrupted the team’s momentum as the technical team wanted to give other players some game time before the campaign ends.

“They were sort of rotating the squad. That disrupted the whole momentum because other players need to be given a chance to play.

“If you make changes they don’t have to be drastic because that will disrupt the team. But we’ll expect that from Sundowns because they have a lot of players.

“You need to have players working as a system for the whole season because there is no way you can give 30 players a chance to play in one season,” he added.
