Gallants and SuperSport fire blanks in Polokwane
Marumo Gallants and SuperSport United played to a 0-0 draw in a DStv Premiership clash at the Peter Mokaba Stadium, Polokwane, on Tuesday evening.
It was a drama-free match until in-form striker Bradley Grobler missed a penalty that could have sealed the game with six minutes remaining.
Gallants started the better side and striker Ranga Chivaviro missed an easy opportunity when his header from inside the box went wide in the fifth minute.
The visitors, SuperSport responded a minute later through a set-piece situation but Siphesihle Ndlovu shot also went wide.
SUPERSPORT UNITED HELD BY MARUMO GALLANTS
Both teams kept on piling the pressure but it was Gallants who were denied a clear penalty after Siphesihle Ndlovu handled the ball inside the 18-area box late in the half.
The referee ignored the appeal from the Gallants players. A few minutes later, Gallants defender Tshepo Gumede was shown the yellow card for a bad foul on Grant Margeman.
SuperSport nearly got the lead with a minute remaining before the halftime break when Gamphani Lungu’s shot hit the left post. Both teams went to the halftime break at 0-0.
There was not much happening in the opening minutes of the second half with both teams failing to create opportunities.
SuperSport defender Thulani Hlatshwayo came close to finding the back of the net, but his header was blocked. The Tshwane side had a better second half than Gallants but failed to capitalise.
Bradley Grobler should have easily found the back of the net with 10 minutes remaining but his shot missed with an inch.
Grobler was afforded another opportunity, this time with a penalty kick. But the 35-year-old saw his kick fly over the bar, much to the dismay of his teammates and technical team.
DRAW VITAL FOR BAHLABANE BA NTWA
With the draw, SuperSport moved back to second position on the log with 44 points and four matches to go. The point was also vital for Gallants, who jumped to 13th place. They are now on 28 points and moved out of the relegation zone.
