What Pitso Mosimane’s Al-Ahli Saudi FC need to secure promotion
Despite dropping points in their last match, Pitso Mosimane’s Al-Ahli Saudi FC are well on course to clinching promotion to the Saudi Pro League.
The enthralling 2-2 draw against Al-Faisaly last time out did very little to derail The Royals from their mission to return to the lucrative Saudi top-flight.
Giovanni Solinas’ Al-Faisaly came back from two goals down to earn a point late in the match in what was a battle of two former PSL coaches.
PITSO MOSIMANE’S AHLI EDGING CLOSER TO PROMOTION
Mosimane might have been disappointed with the manner in which his side dropped points, but he would have been aware that a point took them closer to one of their goals.
When Mosimane took over the reins at the club late last year, his mandate was clear – lead Ahli back into the land of milk and honey.
And now, that mandate looks set to be fulfilled by the celebrated South African tactician in his first season in the Middle East.
Mosimane’s side only need seven points from their remaining six league matches to seal promotion back to the lucrative top-flight.
It is safe to say the former Mamelodi Sundowns mentor has successfully awoken the sleeping giant and taken the club where they belong.
SAUDI FIRST DIVISION TITLE WITHIN TOUCHING DISTANCE
So big has been Mosimane’s impact at the club that they have now set their sights on an even bigger target, winning the Saudi First Division League title.
Ahli are currently sitting at the top of the table with 59 points from 28 matches, three clear of second-placed Al-Akhdoud who have played a game less.
Both Ahli and Akhdoud will be back in action on Monday when they face Al-Sahel and Jeddah, respectively in their bids to remain in title contention.
Third-placed Al-Hazm and fourth-placed Al-Riyadh are both still in with a shot, however, they also need to look over their shoulder’s with Al-Faisaly still chasing promotion.
