Kaizer Motaung Jr responds to Cardoso trophy comments

Kaizer Chiefs sporting director Kaizer Motaung Jr has responded to the comments made by Amakhosi former defender Daniel Cardoso.

The Sekhukhune United player has been vocal about his time at Chiefs and the club’s current situation since his departure at the end of last season.

He spent seven years at the club and was part of the generation that failed to win a single trophy.

WHAT DANIEL CARDOSO SAID ABOUT CHIEFS’

During an interview with the media on Monday, the former Bafana Bafana international suggested that it would be a struggle for Chiefs, coached by Arthur Zwane to win trophies with a bunch of youngsters.

The Soweto giants, eager to end their eight-year trophy drought, are in contention for the Nedbank Cup and a CAF Champions League or Confederation Cup spot.

“I don’t want to open up a can of worms, but youngsters are not going to win you titles and trophies,” Cardoso told the media.

“They are in a rebuilding phase, as you can see. They got rid of all the experienced players.”

KAIZER MOTAUNG JR RESPONDS

During an interview on Radio 2000 on Thursday, 20 April 2023, Motaung Jr labelled Cardoso’s remarks as tone-deaf and unfortunate.

“I think I must say that Daniel’s comments were a bit unfortunate. He is a player, who spent seven seasons at Kaizer Chiefs as an experienced player and won nothing,” said Motaung Jr.

“In that breath that can be seen as a period in the club of history where we were the least successful. So it baffles my mind how he would even utter the word title in anything to do with himself and Kaizer Chiefs.

“We have not spoken on other comments he has made or others have made, it’s not what the club does. But I think that it’s more of a slap in the face for our supporters when they hear someone like Daniel saying what he said,” he added.

“Especially with the fact that in those years that he was here he was playing almost all the games. I think it was a bit tone-deaf and again with all due respect I do wish him well at his new club.”

Amakhosi will take on Cardoso’s Sekhukhune United at Peter Mokaba Stadium on Sunday, 23 April 2023 in a DStv Premiership clash.
