Ronwen Williams equals big DStv Premiership record

Ronwen Williams’ impressive maiden campaign in the colours of Mamelodi Sundowns continues as he equalled a DStv Premiership record.

The Bafana Bafana captain has been a revelation for the Tshwane giants since joining from rivals SuperSport United at the beginning of the season.

His form has been key to Sundowns’ dominant run in the league, where they bagged their sixth title on the spin with seven matches to spare.

RONWEN WILLIAMS’ FINE FORM FOR SUNDOWNS

Williams has also been crucial to the Brazilians’ scintillating form in the CAF Champions League, where they have one foot in the semi-finals.

They defeated CR Belouizdad 4-1 in their quarter-final first leg away from home and will be out to finish the job at Loftus Versfeld on Saturday.

Their colossal keeper will head into that clash high in confidence after he achieved a major milestone in the league, equalling a PSL record for a keeper in a single season.

Williams drew level with former Orlando Pirates shot-stopper Moeneeb Josephs as the keepers with the most clean sheets in a single season.

Josephs held the record alone after keeping 17 clean sheets for Pirates in the 2009-10 campaign, but Williams has now equalled the feat.

WILLIAMS EQUALS BIG RECORD

The 31-year-old achieved this after his side’s 1-0 win over Premiership rookies Richards Bay on Tuesday afternoon at Loftus Versfeld.

He will be out to break the record when Sundowns are next in action in the Premiership. They face AmaZulu at the Princess Magogo Stadium on 3 May.

He has three more matches to try and break the record, with Sundowns set to face Marumo Gallants and Maritzburg United before the campaign ends.

Williams has been so impressive for Sundowns that he had kept veteran stoppers Denis Onyango and Kennedy Mweene out of the team.

He has made 32 appearances for Rulani Mokwena’s side this season in all competitions, keeping 19 clean sheets in the process.
