How Rulani Mokwena’s playing style landed him in trouble
Mamelodi Sundowns coach Rulani Mokwena has revealed how his playing style once landed him in trouble at the club.
Under Rulani Mokwena, Sundowns have not only been grinding prefect results but they have been winning in style.
And the former Chippa United gaffer has been praised by fans who feel he is one step ahead of Pitso Mosimane in the way he approach matches.
Infact, Rulani Mokwena is known for preferring possession based football, while also fancying a tactically adaptable team.
Mokwena has often revealed how that most of his tactics are derived from extensive video footage analysis.
He also banks on repeated team meetings to review their tactics, with the aid of video technology.
WHY RULANI HAS VOWED TO BE DIFFERENT
The youthful Mamelodi Sundowns coach has vowed to be different in the DStv Premiership, and winning this season’s title has left him on cloud nine.
“It doesn’t matter how we play. We can play like Real Madrid or PSG or maybe Liverpool who won the Champions League with transitions,” said Mokwena.
“Maybe that is what helps us to win. If it is, then we will play that way. We are not fiaxted. But because its the game model, that comes with culture, squad profile and then players, thats why we play that way.
“I’m always being told that the dangerous answer is being told, you’ve always done it this way.
“The evolution of society is depended on people who try to push boundaries. And try to find many other ways of doing things because without that then we sit in a space where there is comfort.
“But comfort doesn’t bring any growth. We try as much as we can to challenge ourselves because we want to grow. Its the road less travelled but we will get there. We might get bruises along the way, but we will succeed,” added.
HOW THE PLAYING STYLE HAS LANDED MOKWENA IN TROUBLE
The Mamelodi Sundowns coach Mokwena revealed how his playing style has often landed him in trouble at the club.
“Its going to be painful at times but we are going to have stretch ourselves. We are willing to fall because the journey is a bit too dark. Its the kind of person I am and I try to teach that to players, to think broadly and try new things,” he revealed.
“Find different solutions. Sometimes it gets me into trouble, it does because even if you look at my track record as a coach.
“My team has never struggled to score goals but at times we have been way too open to concede but thats the way I believe football should be played.
“Its the feelings that I bring everyday to training. Its the type of football that I enjoy watching and hopefully we enjoy. Our job is to try and win every game.”
Mamelodi Sundowns have been so good in every aspect, so much that they are in a position that giants, Kaizer Chiefs and Orlando Pirates dream of being in.
In terms of playing style, Orlando Pirates appear to have greatly improved, focusing on a possession-based game under Jose Riveiro.
However the Buccaneers are still short in terms star quality. It remains to be seen if they can be able to spend as much as Sundowns in the transfer market.
