How much Sundowns, Marumo will get in CAF prize money
FARPost looks at how much Mamelodi Sundowns and Marumo Gallants will get in prize money for making the semi-finals of CAF inter-club competitions.
Sundowns beat Algerian side CR Belouizdad 6-2 on aggregate to progress to the last four of the CAF Champions League on Saturday. They had beaten them 4-1 in their backyard in Algiers a week prior before a 2-1 win in Pretoria.
They face their biggest test in defending African champions Wydad Athletic Club of Morocco in a two-legged semi this month.
CAF PRIZE MONEY BREAKDOWN
Wydad will host Sundowns in Casablanca on May 12, 2023, before visiting Pretoria a week later.
Marumo also set up a semi-final clash against Tanzania’s Young Africans when they beat Fagrie Lakay’s Pyramids 2-1 on aggregate.
A Celimpilo Ngema strike was enough to eliminate the Egyptian side. Marumo had played a 1-1 draw in Cairo in the first leg courtesy of a Ranga Chivaviro strike.
They visit Yanga in Dar es Salaam on May 10, 2023, before hosting them in South Africa a week later. The two clubs have already secured millions of rand by qualifying for the last four.
As it stands, Sundowns have a US$1.2 million [R22 million] cheque guaranteed for reaching this stage of the competition.
Should they go past Wydad and book a place in the final, they will be guaranteed US$2 million [R36.8m] even if they lose.
The winner of Africa’s premier club competition receives US$4 million [R73.5m].
In addition, winning the Champions League will see them go to the money-spinning FIFA Club World Cup, where they meet champions of other continents. They will also play the winner of the CAF Confederation Cup in the CAF Super Cup, which also comes with its prize money.
For reaching the semis, Marumo have US$750 000 [R13.7 million] guaranteed. If they go past Yanga, they could potentially earn US$1 million [R18,1 million] if they finish as runners-up.
For winning the competition, the prize would be USD2 million [R36,7 million]. The country’s football mother body is paid 5% of the two club’s earnings.
