SuperSport United slip up in Champions League race

SuperSport United may have lost their chances of finishing second in the DStv Premiership following their 0-0 draw against Stellenbosch FC at home on Tuesday evening.

The two points dropped at TUT Stadium are detrimental to Matsatsantsa’s CAF Champions League’s aspirations as they remain in third place on the log standings.

They are one point adrift of second-placed Orlando Pirates, who have a game in hand.

With SuperSport missing the chance to move to second spot, Pirates will be eager to win their game in hand against Royal AM on Wednesday. The victory would see the Soweto giant, open a four-point gap in the Champions League race spot with two games to spare.

Despite Stellenbosch fielding their B-team as they rested their regulars for the Nedbank Cup semi-final clash against Sekhukhune United, SuperSport struggled throughout the game.

In addition, the Cape Winelands side were missing their top player Iqraam Rayners, who wasn’t available for selection due to the deal between the two clubs after joining in January on a permanent deal.

LESS ACTION PACKED FIRST HALF

The first half was short in action in the final third as both teams were only active in the middle of the park.
SuperSport were slightly dominant in ball possession. They had 54 per cent compared to 46 of Stellenbosch.

The visitors were the first to threaten at goal through Sinethemba Mngomezulu, but his shot assisted by Jayden Adams went wide.

24-year-old Gamphani Lungu came close twice for the hosts to open the scoring in the 20th and 22nd minute, but his efforts were not on target, as they went wide of goal.

Therefore, the teams went on the break deadlocked at 0-0.

DULL SECOND HALF

In the second half, the Cape Town outfit started strong, Jayden Adams almost opened the scoring, but his shot was well saved by goalkeeper Ricardo Goss. Two minutes later, Lasse Sobiech’s headed effort from the centre of the box went over the bar.

SuperSport’s first chance in the second hand half came through midfield engine Grant Margeman 52 minutes into the encounter.

His left footed strike went wide. On the hour mark, Jamie Webber almost scored from a direct freekick, but missed far right.

In the 86th minute, substitute, Zakhele Lepasa conceded a penalty through a hand ball. But the spot kick was missed.
