PSL club may be hit with points deduction for using defaulter

In a new twist that could affect the Motsepe Foundation Championship, a PSL club may be hit with a points deduction for using a defaulter. Motsepe Foundation Championship side Venda Football Academy have been summoned to appear before the PSL DC on Tuesday, 9 May.

This comes after the club was charged with misconduct for the improper registration of Athini Jodwana. According to the charge sheet seen by FARPost, VFA is alleged to have submitted a clearance certificate of Jodwana issued by fellow Motsepe Foundation side AlI Stars FC.

But All Stars was not the last club that Jodwana played for but SAFA ABC Motsepe side Nyanga Zizwe United.

Jodwana, who last played for All Stars during the 2021/22 season, joined VFA in January 2023. But between the period of August 2022 and December 2022, he featured for Zizwe United in the Western Cape.

PSL CLUB ACCUSED OF FIELDING A DEFAULTER

Jodwana featured for VFA the club in matches against Cape Town Spurs, Uthongathi, Hungry Lions, University of Pretoria, Casric Stars, La Masia and Black Leopards. During the said matches VFA collected 11 points.

VFA are currently 10th on the Motsepe Foundation Championship log with 34 points and two games remaining. They are 12 points above bottom-placed Black Leopards and 11 points above TTM who occupy the other relegation spot.

As it stands, both Leopards and TTM are set to face the chop to the ABC Motsepe League.

Jodwana has also been charged for contravening PSL rule 31.1, 31.3, 31.4 and 31.11.3, participating in matches when he was ineligible to do so.

VFA COULD BE HIT WITH POINTS DEDUCTION

A similar case occurred during the 2019/20 national first division season but under different circumstances.

Mbombela United were docked 23 points and subsequently relegated after being found guilty of fielding a defaulter Sabelo Ndzinisa.

Ndzinisa, who had played 20 games for the club, was also banned for two years. Mbombela who had finished 14th, dropped to position 16, while their neighbours TS Sporting, who finished 15th survived the chop.

It was discovered that the player had signed for Sporting before he signed for Mbombela.

The case is set to sit at 10:00 at the PSL offices.
