Ronwen Williams sets new PSL record
Mamelodi Sundowns goalkeeper Ronwen Williams has set a new PSL record following his side’s triumph over Marumo Gallants.
Masandawana beat Bahlabani ba Ntwa with a 2-0 scoreline at the Peter Mokaba Stadium. With that victory Sundowns returned to winning ways after their draw against AmaZulu on Wednesday.
Williams kept his 18th clean sheet for the Tshwane giants this season, a new record for a goalkeeper in a single campaign in the PSL.
RONWEN WILLIAMS SURPASSES MONEEB JOSEPHS’ RECORD
He surpassed the former Orlando Pirates shot-stopper, Moneeb Josephs’ record of 17 clean sheets that he set in the 2009/10 season.
Not only pulling out some stunning saves but helping his side to start the ball from the back comfortably is also what Williams has done well in his maiden season at Chloorkop.
The 31-year-old goalie won the DStv Premiership Player of the Month award for December/January. This was after he kept six clean sheets in the league between the two months.
Sundowns completed the signing of the Bafana Bafana captain in July last year. He waved his goodbye to SuperSport United, a club he joined in 2004 at the tender age of 12 after he was scouted in a youth tournament.
The Port Elizabeth-born walked straight into the starting line-up, seizing the gloves from the former Downs number one ‘keeper Denis Onyango. He has played more than 30 games in all competitions for Rulani Mokwena’s side since he signed.
With two matches to go, Williams can still stretch his record to 20 clean sheets. Thats if he gets to play in the remaining games.
OTHER GOALKEEPERS IN THE TOP FIVE WITH MOST CLEAN SHEETS
Meanwhile, Richards Bay FC goalkeeper Salim Magoola is second after Williams having managed not to concede in 11 games.
Ricardo Goss [SuperSport United], Badra Sangare [Sekhukhune], Darren Keet [Cape Town City] and Melusi Buthelezi [TS Galaxy] share the third place after keeping nine clean sheets.
In fourth place, Brandon Peterson of Kaizer Chiefs and Veli Mothwa of AmaZulu have seven. Lastly, Marumo Gallants’ Washington Arubi and Swallows’ Thakasani Mbanjwa are fifth with five each.
