‘Hopefully, he’ll get the big award’: Themba Zwane on Sundowns teammate
Mamelodi Sundowns talisman Themba Zwane is vouching for his teammate to ‘get the big award’ come end of the season.
Zwane was speaking after Sundowns’ 2-0 win over Marumo Gallants on Saturday in the DStv Premiership.
The 2019/20 player of the season was named man of the match at the end of the Gallants tie.
ROOM FOR IMPROVEMENT
Instead, he gave credit to a Sundowns teammate, tipping him to go all the way and win the big award.
“I think personally I did well, but obviously there will always be room for improvement,” he told SuperSport TV.
“I think we did well. The game went according to our plan. We tried to play more and keep more ball possession. We created more chances and took our chances. At least today, we managed to take two of our chances.”
Zwane denied that the Brazilians had taken their foot off the pedal after winning their sixth successive title.
“Our focus is we want to push ourselves to finish on a high note for the league. So, each and every game is important for us. We’re pushing well as a team.”
His coach Rulani Mokwena shared the same sentiments, saying his players were “very, very good”.
“I take a lot of stick, but it comes with the territory…,” Mokwena told SuperSport TV.
“We were good, very, very good. So proud of these players.”
Mokwena believes despite their hectic programme this season. They’ve managed to ‘make it look so easy’. Sundowns are in the semi-finals of the CAF Champions League, where they face Wydad Casablanca on Friday. The return leg is set for Pretoria the following weekend.
“What an effort today. We’ve got the toughest programme in the country, but we make it look so easy because they’re good,” said the Sundowns coach.
THEMBA ZWANE ON SUNDOWNS TEAMMATE
‘Mshishi’ then zoomed in to a player he feels makes them tick. He singled out Bafana Bafana captain Ronwen Williams as the one player who has been a vital cog for Sundowns.
Williams has kept 18 clean sheets this season, surpassing Moneeb Josephs’ record of 17 clean sheets in the 2009/10 season.
The Gqeberha-born goalie moved to Sundowns from SuperSport at the start of the season. There were doubts over whether he would displace Denis Onyango, but he has been exceptional.
“I think he did well this season. He’s been helping us with build-up.
“You can see the way he passes the ball; he makes us tick as a team even though he’s a goalkeeper.
“He’s an extra man for our build up. Hopefully, he’ll get the big award,” concluded Zwane.
