SAFA have confirmed the appointment of a new CEO following the departure of Tebogo Motlanthe.
Motlanthe, who resigned last week, is rumoured to be on his way to the PSL.
Motlanthe has resigned with immediate effect and will not be serving any notice. SAFA has wasted no time in replacing Motlanthe.
In a press briefing held at the SAFA house on Monday, the association confirmed the appointment of Lydia Monyepao as the new CEO.
SAFA APPOINT NEW CEO
Monyepao is a former Banyana Banyana player who also managed the team between 2012 and 2014. She was also serving as the Chief operating officer at the association.
The president of SAFA Danny Jordaan said it was an urgent decision to replace the outgoing CEO immediately.
“Yesterday, the emergency committee discussed the question of the appointment of a CEO,” he said. “Be tomorrow we are going to Cape Town. We have a meeting with the government to discuss the [2027 World Cup] bid. We have deadlines, and we must meet those deadlines.
“So, the work must carry on and that’s why we said we can not have a vacancy for one day. We must immediately act and appoint the CEO.
“Of course, we are fortunate that we have a person who has been with SAFA for a long time. She was a player with Banyana Banyana, she has the ability.”
LYDIA MONYEPAO HAS BIG SHOES TO FILL
Monyepao admits she is filling in big shoes taking over from Motlanthe.
“It’s big shoes that I am filling,” she told the media.
“But I think I have to hit the ground running and I am capable of hitting the ground running. So I will take the task and take the work forward.
“I am not naive in terms of what is required from this job, I know the challenges that surround the South African Football Association. As indicated, no job is easy, you have to take it as it comes and also apply what you are good and capable of,” said Monyepao.
“So thanks to the president and the NEC for having confidence in me and my abilities. I was working with advocate Motlanthe on many issues and the important issues around South African football. So I do have the knowledge in terms of what was happening and what needs to carry forward.”
