Former Kaizer Chiefs defender faces a six-week lay-off in the MLS

A former Kaizer Chiefs defense stalwart will miss football action in Major League Soccer [MLS] for at least six weeks after undergoing surgery.

The Houston Dynamo defender was put under the knife after suffering an injury on his right leg last week.

As a result of the injury, the former Kaizer Chiefs centre-back Teenage Hadebe missed last weekend’s match against Real Salt Lake.

The Zimbabwean international revealed his ordeal on his Twitter account, albeit hopeful of a speedy recovery.

“Road to recovery. Big thanks to Dr. Greaser and his team on successful surgery.

“[I am] thankful for all the support from my family, friends and teammates. Houston Dynamo, can’t wait to be back,” Hadebe tweeted.

The Zimbabwe international has played eight matches so far, with no goal to his name. Hadebe is one of the three former PSL stars currently plying their trade in Major League Soccer.

The other two are Njabulo Blom and Bongokuhle Hlongwane. Ex-Chiefs ace Njabulo Blom joined Major League Soccer newbies St Louis City this season.

Meanwhile, the former Maritzburg United attacker Bongokuhle Hlongwane completes the list as he plays for Minnesota United.

Hadebe joined Kaizer Chiefs from Chicken Inn in 2017 after impressing during the 2016 edition of the CAF Champions League.

He joined alongside Edmore Chirambadare and Mitchell Katsvairo from the same team, Chicken Inn.

Hadebe went on to spend two seasons at Naturena, where he was a regular feature in the team’s defense. And as his profile kept rising, Amakhosi then sold the defender to Turkey club Yeni Malatyaspor in 2019.

Earlier this year, the DStv Premiership giants were cornered by Hadebe’s former club, Chicken Inn.

The Zimbabwean club claimed they were entitled to a sell-on fee in the event the player is transferred to another club. Chiefs later settled the dues.
