Aubrey Modiba names his toughest opponent in recent times

Mamelodi Sundowns wing-back Aubrey Modiba has revealed the toughest player he’s faced recently.

Modiba joined Sundowns during the 2020/21 DStv Premiership season from arch-rivals SuperSport United, who sold a handful of their key players to the Brazilians in recent times.

Amongst other players who have switched from SuperSport to Sundowns in recent years is Jeremy Brockie, Grant Kekana, Teboho Mokoena, Sipho Mbule, and Ronwen Williams.

In the 2022/23 campaign, the Bafana Bafana international, Modiba has made 30 appearances for Sundowns in all competitions, scoring two goals and providing five assists.

Modiba has proven his versatility to play in different positions at Sundowns which saw him play as a left-back, left-winger and sometimes slotting in as a wing-forward.

Despite enjoying a fair amount of game time since joining Masandawana, the School of Excellence product has opened up about one player he struggled to contain.

“Obviously it’s not easy to adjust to a new role and there will be mistakes,” said Modiba Radio 2000.

“It was tough against Percy [Tau] because he’s the master of the negative press. And it’s hard to stop him on his day.

“There was a lot of criticism [after a match against Al Ahly]. Even the coach [Rulani Mokwena] called me to the office. But we spoke about it and sorted it out.

Modiba further revealed the player he watch to enhance his game and his new role at Sundowns.

“I’m enjoying my new role as an inverted fullback. Firstly I’m picked as a fullback but I have to go inside to create that extra layer in the midfield.

“I also cover less space instead of overlapping, I watch Zinchenko a lot, he has mastered this role[fullback],” Modiba added.

Meanwhile, Modiba will be looking to help Sundowns to overcome Wydad Casablanca in CAF Champions League semi-final on the 12th of May.
