Maritzburg United to consider selling status due to relegation?
Relegation-threatened Maritzburg United are seemingly contemplating selling their SA topflight status amid their poor form in the DStv Premiership.
Maritzburg United have struggled to find consistent form in the 2022/23 campaign as they continue to linger in the relegation zone.
The Team of Choice started the season with John Maduka as their head coach. The Malawian-born coach was shown the exit door at the club mid-way through the season.
With results not going their way, the KZN side re-hired Fladu Davids for his second stint as a head coach.
However, the ex-Orlando Pirates co-coach, Davids, has seemingly struggled to turn the fortunes of Maritzburg.
The club is languishing at the basement of the Premiership table. They are three points behind Chippa United and Marumo Gallants, placed 15th and 14th, respectively, on the log.
Maritzburg, with 26 points, have only won six games this season, with eight draws and 14 defeats in 28 games.
With only two matches left before the conclusion of the 2022/23 campaign, this publication has gathered that Maritzburg will consider selling the club should they be relegated to the Motsepe Foundation Championship.
MARITZBURG UNITED CONTEMPLATING ON SELLING PSL STATUS
“There’s a sense of panic around the club at the moment,” a source close to the club told FARPost.
“So the players have already been told that should the team be relegated, the club might go on sale.
“The club is likely to be sold purely because of the difficulty that comes with running the team in the National First Division. The financial constraints that come with it,” added the source.
Maritzburg will be looking to move off the foot of the table when they face Stellenbosch FC and Mamelodi Sundowns in their last two games.
They will face Stellies on Saturday, 13 May, before closing off their campaign against champions Sundowns.
