Steve Barker tips two Stellenbosch FC youngsters for PSL award

Stellenbosch FC coach Steve Barker has backed two of his youngsters to be contenders for the PSL Young Player of the Season award following their impressive outings for the club, writes Joshua Hendricks.

Barker believes the two youngsters have enjoyed an impressive season with Stellenbosch FC.

The Western Cape-based side has punched above its weight in the 2022/23 season under Barker.

They are sixth on the DStv Premiership log standings; guaranteed a top eight finish with two games left. In addition, Stellies reached the Nedbank Cup semi-finals, where they lost to Sekhukhune United.

Barker has singled out highly-rated defender Olwethu Makhanya and attacker Jayden Adams as top performers this campaign.

Makhanya played in the DStv Diski Challenge for Marumo Gallants last season. He joined Stellenbosch FC during the 2023 January transfer window.

“I do think Makhanya could be a contender. I think himself and Jayden Adams,” said Barker, who is a former AmaTuks coach.

“The consistency that they have shown throughout the season, I do believe that they should be in the discussion.

“Definitely, Olwethu, you know the way he has handled himself. He has grown and represented us at national level and cemented his place in our team.
