Motsepe Foundation Championship

Bartlett aiming to achieve Arrows feat with Spurs

Shaun Bartlett has opened up about how he’s aiming to achieve the Golden Arrows feat with Cape Town Spurs.

Bartlett guided Spurs to a hard-fought 2-1 victory against NB La Masia in the penultimate round of the Motsepe Foundation Championship at Dobsonville Stadium last Sunday to take advantage in the title race.

Spurs netted a late winner against La Masia through on-loan Mamelodi Sundowns midfielder Luvuyo Phewa to move close to automatic promotion to the DStv Premiership.

The Capetonians hold a one-point advantage at the summit of the Championship table with 56 points. They are followed by Casric Stars and Polokwane City on 55 and 54 points, respectively.

In the current campaign, Spurs have won 17 games in the league, drawing five and losing seven times after 29 games played.

With Bartlett and his troops being favorites to win the National First Division title, the former Kaizer Chiefs striker has admitted that he want to achieve the promotion like he did with Arrows.

“There’s a lot of excitement and a lot of nerves ahead of the final game of the season,” Bartlett told Andile Ncube on Metro FM.

“We have been very consistent as a team and that is what I always asked from the players. We have to cross the final hurdle and achieve what we set out at the beginning of the season.

“It’s been emotional for me because this is the team where I got my professional debut.

“Also I’ve never been the type of person to do things to prove people wrong. It will be great to do it[gain promotion] for the second time with Cape Town Spurs having done it almost 10 years ago with Golden Arrows.

“We don’t get things because we deserve them but because we’ve worked hard for them. And as far as football is concerned, it’s about playing good football and getting the results,” added Bartlett.

Meanwhile, Spurs will take on University of Pretoria(AmaTuks) in their last match of the season.

The game will be staged at Athlone Stadium on Sunday, 14th of May.
