AmaZulu trigger two more years on midfielder’s contract

AmaZulu FC have triggered two more years on the contract of one of their midfielders ahead of the PSL July-August transfer window.

The club exercised their option to activate two more years on Mswati Mavuso’s contract.

The 22-year-old initially signed a five-month contract with a two-year option to extend. Despite not having made his debut yet, the club has elected to hold onto him.

Mswati joined AmaZulu as a free agent in February when Romain Folz was still at the helm of the Durban-based side.

He was signed after the exit of Makhehlene Makhaula who joined Orlando Pirates in January. Makhaula, who seems to be acclimatising well at the Buccaneers, left a big void at Usuthu.

The KZN outfit has been, at times, made to pay for their midfield frailties, particularly early in the second round of the season.

However, lately, Tercious Malepe seems to have become a solution to those problems. This has also contributed to the overlooking of the former Mamelodi Sundowns academy player.

With one game to go before the curtain comes down on the 2022/23 season, Mswati will be hoping to don the green jersey for the first time when they face Pirates on Saturday, 20 May at Moses Mabhida Stadium at 3 pm.

WHAT ZUNGU SAID ABOUT MSWATI MAVUSO’S SIGNING

When this publication spoke to the club’s president Sandile Zungu about the signing of Mswati earlier this year, he stated that he beheld him as the future.

With Usuthu building for their Vision 2032, Zungu said recruiting young players for the long-term is part of their plan.

He went on to say they didn’t sign Mavuso as Makhaula’s direct replacement because they didn’t want to put pressure on him.

“He’s a future defensive midfielder of the likes of Makhaula,” Zungu told FARPost.

“He’s someone with exceptional potential but we don’t just sign someone because he has potential. We look at a whole lot of other factors.”
