JVW Girls coach on why challenging for league honours is out of sight

JVW Girls head coach Mitch Stevens has revealed why challenging for league honours is out of their sight this season.

JVW sits fourth on the Hollywoodbets Super League log standings after 13 games. They are currently on 27 points, just seven points behind top-of-the-league Sundowns Ladies.

Last season, they finished in a similar position, on 60 points, just 12 points separating them and the league winners, Sundowns.

However, despite their recent form in the league this season, of eight wins, three draws and one loss.

JVW Girls head coach, Stevens, told FARPost that being involved in the title challenge is not part of their goal for this season. Thisis because of the size of their squad.

JVW’S HEAD COACH ON WHY LEAGUE HONOURS IS OUT OF SIGHT

“Sundowns, I can’t see us getting there. You see, their squad size is too big. Our objective is to remain in the top five and keep on bringing in youngsters, and the style of football getting better,” he said.

“The players are loving it, playing positional football, they are enjoying getting the results.

“Getting to the top, we would like to get to the top, but I don’t think we have the depth. The girls have the passion, the drive and the desire but it’s a long season and it’s tough,” added Stevens.

Mitch also revealed what would turn JVW into a title challenge squad.

“More goals! When you play the likes of Sundowns, UWC Ladies, and TS Galaxy Queens, if you don’t score 1 out of three or four chances, you are not going to win games.

“Creating 10 or 15 [chances] to only score two is not enough. Sundowns can finish from anywhere and anyhow, and that’s where we are lacking,” concluded the JVW head coach.

JVW’s next league game will be against high flying UWC on Saturday, 20 May, away from home.
