Sirino reflects on trophy-laden Sundowns career

Mamelodi Sundowns star Gaston Sirino has reflected fondly at his trophy-laden stay at the club in the wake of their latest triumph.

The Tshwane giants were officially handed their DStv Premiership trophy on Tuesday after playing their final league match of the campaign.

Sundowns, who were held to a 1-1 draw by relegation candidates Maritzburg United, headed into the clash with the title already wrapped up.

Sundowns have been their usual dominant self in the league this season, bagging their sixth straight title.

And Gaston Sirino reflects on being part of the Sundowns team that has dominated the past six campaigns. The Uruguayan has been one of the key contributors.

The diminutive playmaker arrived in South Africa in 2018 from Bolivar under then-head coach Pitso Mosimane.

He has since emerged as one of the most exciting talents and imports the league has seen in recent history.

“When I got here I never thought I would get six consecutive title, which is now becoming the eighth,” Sirino wrote on social media.

“And being able to enjoy what one loves is priceless. I am grateful to continue enjoying football.”

The Sundowns star has enjoyed his stay so much that he has been tipped to represent South Africa at national level as his adopted country.

Sirino is eligible to represent Bafana Bafana even though he was born in Uruguay. He has previously admitted he would jump at the opportunity.

Sirino qualifies to represent his adopted country because he has been playing professional football in South Africa for over five years without representing his country of birth, Uruguay.

SIRINO’S BAFANA BAFANA AMBITIONS

“I have had a great time in this beautiful country,” Sirino previously told Sundowns Magazine.

“I love everything about it. And if I get presented with the chance to don the national team colorus I would jump at the opportunity. But the decision does not rest with me.

“There is no player born in South America who has played for Bafana Bafana. And if I receive the call, I would be happy to represent this beautiful nation.”
