Denis Onyango addresses retirement question

Mamelodi Sundowns goalkeeper Denis Onyango has addressed the question of whether he’s considering retiring from professional football any time soon.

The 38-year-old won a record 10th premiership title in South Africa following Sundowns’ triumph this season.

Denis Onyango won seven titles at Masandawana and three at SuperSport United making him the player with the most league titles domestically in SA.

The arrival of Ronwen Williams this season at Sundowns has also seen the ex-Ugandan international playing second fiddle to the Bafana Bafana number one.

DENIS ONYANGO NOT THINKING OF RETIREMENT

Onyango was asked during an interview with SABC Radio station PhalaPhala FM on Thursday if he was contemplating calling it quits.

“I still want to lift these trophies,” Onyango said on the sports programme ‘Zwamitambo’.

“The Body still says I can, maybe one or two more seasons you never know. But at the moment the club is saying you can still give us something.

“I think the club also relies on my experience and the leadership that I try to bring in the changing room.

“So yeah the body still allows me to play a little bit longer. why not? I have seen some players playing until there were 40 or 42. But we will see what the club thinks of me but I also have to listen to my body,” added Onyango.

PROUD OF FELLOW MAMELODI SUNDOWNS GOALKEEPER

Onyango has also congratulated fellow keeper Ronwen William on the record clean sheets and SPL Awards nominations.

“He is incredible. All the qualities that he has as a person and personality is great. He came through and he competed and did well.,” he said.

“A lot of people thought it was game over for him but he has shown character and I am happy for him.

“All those nominations show that the club has signed a quality goalkeeper. Ronwen has shown that he is a quality goalkeeper, 18 clean sheets is massive. The best I did was 16 and what he did was incredible.”
