Morena Ramoreboli could wrap up league title in Botswana

Cosafa Cup-winning coach Morena Ramoreboli could wrap up the Botswana Premier League title this weekend.

Ramoreboli is in charge of mining outfit Jwaneng Galaxy in the neighbouring country. After playing 27 games, Galaxy have amassed 63 points while second-placed Gaborone United are on 58.

MORENA RAMOREBOLI POISED TO WIN TITLE

In round 28 of the Botswana Premier League, Ramoreboli’s charges travel to Orapa, in the Central District of Botswana, to play a mining derby.

They clash with Orapa United, bankrolled by the Orapa diamond mine, the largest diamond-producing mine in the world.

“The clash between title-chasing Jwaneng Galaxy and Orapa United is the most important clash in the recent history of both clubs,” said Bongani Malunga, sports editor of the Botswana Gazette.

“This game carries enormous significance in determining the destination of the league title, especially for Galaxy, who are chasing their second league title in the last three years.

“Winning the league this year would be even more special as it would be the first time they have won the league in an entire 30-game season.

BOTSWANA PREMIER LEAGUE TABLE

“Morena Ramoreboli’s side needs to win today, and hope Rollers holds Gaborone United to a draw.

The Gaborone derby, just like any other derby, is a level playing field, and the form book goes out of the window.

“A draw for GU would present a seven-point gap for Ramoreboli, which would all but seal the title for the South African coach,” added the author of Why An African Team May Never Win The World Cup.

HOGGED THE LIMELIGHT

Both matches kick off at 3pm and will determine where the title goes.

Ramoreboli hogged the limelight he guided Bafana Bafana to the Cosafa Cup title as caretaker coach in 2021. Bafana assistant coach Helman Mkhalele had been sidelined due to Covid.

Thereafter, he took charge of Galaxy, guiding them to the CAF Champions League group stage for the first time in their history. On their way to making history, Galaxy dismantled Tanzanian giants Simba SC in their backyard Benjamin Mkapa Stadium.

Ramoreboli was in charge of Maluti FET College when they famously beat Orlando Pirates in the 2012/13 Nedbank Cup.
