Hunt labels his PSL Awards nomination as ‘window dressing’
SuperSport United coach Gavin Hunt has reacted to his PSL Coach of the Season award nomination. Hunt has been nominated alongside Mamelodi Sundowns coach Rulani Mokwena and Orlando Pirates coach Jose Riveiro. The three have had an impressive season with their respective clubs.
THREE COACHES VYING FOR THE TOP PSL AWARD
Mokwena has won the DStv Premiership title in his first season in charge as a solo head coach. He has also led Masandawana to the semifinals of the CAF Champions League but was unfortunately knocked out by Wydad AC on Saturday.
Riveiro, on the other hand, is on course to win his second trophy in his first season in South Africa. The Spaniard has guided the Buccaneers to a second-place finish in the DStv Premiership and subsequently secured a CAF Champions League spot.
Pirates will take on Sekhukhune United in a Nedbank Cup final on Saturday. A win for the Soweto giants will mean they are the only club to win two trophies this season after the MTN 8 triumph.
GAVIN HUNT NOT OPTIMISTIC
But Hunt, who guided SuperSport to a third-place finish for the first time since 2013, says his nomination is
“They put my name just to make it glorify the [list],” he jokingly said. “Don’t worry, I won’t be winning that. It’s not what I think [that he had a great season]. It’s window dressing,” he further joked. “I have won it six times, so it’s okay. No one else will win it six times.”
“I don’t deserve it. Whoever wins it is fantastic. Nominations are a combination of hard work for everyone behind the scenes, and you have to be the coach,” he said.
“But there has also been a lot of hard work from all the assistant coaches. Strengthening and conditioning people so if anything gets one, it will be because of them.”
