Rulani Mokwena’s bold claim after Champions League exit

Mamelodi Sundowns coach Rulani Mokwena has made a bold claim following his team’s exit from the CAF Champions League.

Sundowns were booted out of the competition painfully. They were held to a 2-2 draw by defending champions Wydad AC at Loftus Versfeld Stadium on Saturday, 20 May.

The Tshwane giants were in the driving seat and destined for the final to face Egyptian powerhouse Al Ahly leading 2-1 until defender Mthobi Mvala netted an own goal in the 83rd minute.

RULANI MOKWENA’S BOLD CLAIM

The disappointed mentor, down and emotional during the post-match conference, says they will win the Champions League.

This may happen in the next coming seasons, and claims Sundowns will come back a more robust and improved side.

“We will continue with this dream, and we will win the [CAF] Champions League,” said Mokwena.

“It might not be this season, of course, it might not be next season, but eventually, we’ll win the Champions League.

“We will win it playing the way the club, its supporters, its culture because if you change the style of play, we take out quite a lot of what speaks to this club.”

“For sure next season, we will be stronger. We haven’t been in the semi-final for the last three years of a very important competition and a very difficult competition.

WHAT RULANI MOKWENA IS HAPPY ABOUT

Despite the disappointment of not winning the title, Mokwena was proud that his troops maintained a 100 percent unbeaten run throughout the competition.

“‘I’m extremely proud of the players, and I’m proud of the effort. In a very difficult competition, we finished unbeaten against some strong opponents. But there is an element of disappointment. We will go again and try to make this dream a reality,” he added.
