Eric Tinkler reveals what tainted City’s campaign
Cape Town City head coach Eric Tinkler has revealed what tainted their campaign in the just-ended 2022/23 DStv Premiership season.
CT City came into the season as one of the teams to watch after finishing runners-up to Mamelodi Sundowns in the league during the 2021/22 season.
The Cape Town-based outfit was let down by inconsistency for the better part of the campaign, which saw them finish fourth on the league table. City missed out on the CAF interclub competitions for next season.
City have won 12 games in the league, drawn nine and lost nine times in 30 games of the season that wrapped up this passed weekend.
Despite beating Kaizer Chiefs 1-0 in their last match of the season. Tinkler has pinpointed what made their season not to be the best one.
ERIC TINKLER GIVES A SUMMARY OF CAPE TOWN CITY’S CAMPAIGN
“It was the way we started the season; we didn’t get the results. Even the first game[of the season] against Sundowns, we didn’t deserve to lose,” said Tinkler at FNB Stadium.
“I think we deserved to get at least one point in that game but we didn’t, Swallows away same thing and AmaZulu it was the same thing.
“So everything had to do with the start, when you start that way and you go five games without a win, the pressure is on.
“Because the media start talking and the pressure is on the players, the technical team and on the club. So the way we start is extremely important.
“We didn’t have the start that we needed to have. Even in that first game against Sundowns the back four that kept most cleansheets last season wasn’t there.
“Not a single one of them, Terrence Mashego was injured, Taariq Fielies, Thamsanqa Mkhize were injured and Nathan Fasika was still in Congo.
“We went with a complete new back four and we had to use that in the next four games. So I think our problems started there,” he added.
