SuperSport CEO reveals Gavin Hunt’s biggest regret of the season

SuperSport United CEO Stan Matthews has revealed Gavin Hunt’s biggest regret of the 2022/23 season.

Matsatsantsa CEO stated that Hunt’s regret was not to play youngster Ime Okon during the side’s 2-1 defeat to Dondol Stars in the Nedbank Cup last 32 clash.

The SuperSport United starlet, Okon, had joined signed by the side from amateur side Randburg Football Club.

On that day, Hunt decided to deploy striker Thamsanqa Gabuza in central defence which cost the Tshwane giant dearly.

After the defeat to the Gauteng ABC Motsepe League champions, Hunt noted that he had no choice but to deploy Gabuza as centre-back as his regulars were ruled out with severe injuries.

Matthews has since revealed Hunt’s regret of the season giving an analogy to young players they are earmarking to play next campaign.

“We have got a young centre-back that we signed from Randburg Football Club seven months ago. He has outstripped kids that have been eight years in our system. Ime Okon, you guys might have seen a little bit about him,” said Matthews.

“He’s big, strong, and fast. If you speak to my biokinetic, will tell you he’s of Bongani Khumalo speed. And he’s definitely one player we are earmarking to play.”

STAN MATTHEWS REVEALS GAVIN HUNT’S BIGGEST REGRET

“If you ask Gavin Hunt right now what’s his biggest regret for the season, would be not throwing in Ime Okon to play in the Nedbank. And going with the kind of left field playing Thamsanqa Gabuza as a centre-back against Dondol Stars.

“If he [Hunt] would do over he would put Ime Okon in and he’s not going to make that mistake again. So, I’m hoping that kids like Ime is going to come in and show us what he can do.”

Meanwhile, the Tshwane-based outfit looks to be effective with their transfer business this coming window period with aim to strengthen key areas. This is to give the side the platform to build on for the domestic and CAF Inter-club football next campaign.
