Why Hugo Broos omitted Lyle Foster for Morocco clash
Following Hugo Broos’ Bafana Bafana preliminary squad announcement for the CAF 2023 AFCON qualifiers against Morocco, Burnley frontman Lyle Foster was snubbed from the national team.
Broos named his 34-man preliminary squad on Tuesday, 23 May. Bafana will take on the Moroccan side at the FNB Stadium on Saturday 17 June 2023.
Both sides have already qualified for the 2023 AFCON tournament. The competition will take place in Ivory Coast from 13 January until 11 February 2024.
The preliminary squad will report to a pre-camp set to take place from 31 May 2023 to 7 June.
Broos will then trim his squad to 23 players when he announces his final squad early next month. The final squad will go into camp on Sunday 11 June 2023.
Foster joined Vincent Kompany’s side from Belgian club K.V.C Westerlo for an undisclosed fee in the January transfer window.
The 22-year-old helped Burnley to gain promotion to the English Premier League after being relegated on the final day of the 2021/22 season.
Abroad, Foster also represented teams such as Belgian Monaco’s farm-club Cercle, Vitória de Guimarães and Westerlo before moving to Burnley.
WHY LYLE FOSTER LEFT OUT OF BAFANA BAFANA SQUAD FOR MOROCCO CLASH
According to Mzansi Ballerz, Burnley sent a request for Foster to be excused from the Bafana squad. This comes after Burnley want him to be part of the club’s pre-season camp at the beginning of next month.
The Ex-Orlando Pirates man helped Broos’ side to secure a spot for the 2023 AFCON tournament. Foster scored three goals in the qualifiers.
Broos will be hoping that the likes of Bongokuhle Hlongwane, Percy Tau, and Khanyisa Mayo will do the work in the absence of Foster. The trio are on song with recent top performances at their respective clubs.
